I was born and raised in Maryland, so I know good seafood, and while it took me years to acquire the taste for beer, I LOVE craft beer. Even better than a good brewery is one with GOOD food!

So while I'll primarily mention craft breweries in Maryland, I'm going to throw in one DC-based craft beer recommendation based on how much I enjoyed on of their appetizers.

Maryland's Craft Beer Scene

Maryland's craft beer scene is a reflection of the state's rich agricultural heritage, with many breweries sourcing ingredients from local farms. This farm-to-table approach not only enhances the flavor profiles of the beers but also supports the local economy and promotes sustainability.

Many breweries are committed to using organic grains, hops, and even fruits from nearby orchards, resulting in unique seasonal brews that capture the essence of Maryland's diverse landscape.

As you explore these breweries, you'll discover how the local terrain influences the taste of the beer, making each sip a true representation of the region.

Guinness Open Gate Brewery

Let's get this one out of the way now since it's well-known. I've only been once and it was ok.

They don't allow dogs so I didn't care to go back. It's certainly worth a visit, and it's super possible you'll have a better appreciation for it than I did.

On to more practical information about the Guinness Open Gate Brewery...

The Guinness Open Gate Brewery, open in Baltimore, Maryland in 2018 and serves as the American home for the iconic Guinness brand. They offer a blend of traditional brewing techniques and modern craft beer experimentation, with some of their varieties being exclusive to Baltimore.

In addition to their industrially designed interior, the brewery has a spacious and family friendly outdoor patio. It's a nice setting for guests to meet with friends and family. But no dogs allowed (booooooo)!

Take the time to schedule in a guided tour if you can and enjoy a tasting to sample a variety of beers, including the limited-edition brews exclusive to the Baltimore location.

Jailbreak Brewery

Ok on to a FAVORITE favorite. So Jailbreak doesn't allow dogs either, but they USED TO and only stopped once they opened their kitchen. Guys, I promise, the food is SO good. It's not shitty bar food that they know they're serving to the drunk folks. It's food meant for the food AND beer connoisseurs, and everything is made in that kitchen is art itself, with their craft beers in mind.

Here's a rundown of the brewery...

Jailbreak, located in Laurel, MD, provides a distinctive dining experience for craft beer lovers and food enthusiasts from the local DMV area.

From gourmet burgers to artisanal pizzas, the menu is designed to satisfy both foodies and beer lovers alike. The feature a rotating selection of beers, including IPAs, stouts, and seasonal specialties that are crafted with care. The atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming, making it a great spot to enjoy a meal with friends or family.

Be sure to look at their events calendar since Jailbreak frequently features live music, trivia nights, and special beer releases, all of which enhance the vibrant atmosphere.

When I was there, they frequently held "tech nights" that offered opportunities to network with companies such as Cisco. Unfortunately, I never managed to attend any, and now I reside in Costa Rica.

Whether you're a local or just visiting, Jailbreak Brewery is a fantastic place to unwind and enjoy the best of Maryland's craft beer scene.

Black Flag Brewery

Located in Colombia, MD, Black Flag was my favorite place to take Taco. They don't have a kitchen, but you can order delivery or check their schedule to see which food truck will be there. The beers are great and their staff is even better. I miss all the 90s themed seasonal beers, like their Z Morris blonde ale.

They also hosts events like beer releases, food pairings, and community get-togethers. It's a perfect place to relax with friends or meet other beer lovers.

Make sure to visit Black Flag Brewery on your Maryland beer tour. It’s a must-see for anyone wanting to discover local craft beer and support the community!

Right Proper Brewing

Right Proper Brewing is my recommendation that isn't necessarily in Maryland, but it's worth a visit while you're there. I'm not a city person, so I didn't spend as much time in D.C. as one may think, so coming here was a bit out of the way for me compared to the others mentioned. Nevertheless, I have to talk about it in this list because of how much I truly enjoyed the beers and the food.

Right Proper has two (2) locations in Washington, D.C. The Shaw location features a full kitchen, where I've had the best buffalo wings EVER. I honestly can't remember what else is on the menu, but there are many options that won't leave you disappointed.

The Brookland location offers brewery tours for an in-depth look at the brewing process. Explore the brewing equipment, learn about the ingredients used, and gain insight into the art of craft beer production.

Both locations allow kids to make it a family outing, and dogs are allowed on the patio. Make sure to grab a growler to take your favorite beers home!

Harpers Ferry Brewing

As picturesque as Harpers Ferry Brewing is, I somehow managed to either not take any pictures or I lost them. Both the patio and indoor areas are spacious and beautifully designed, with the mountains and the Potomac as a backdrop. There are also fire pits outside for when the weather is chilly.

All of my pictures just feature Taco at this spot. Taken at Harpers Ferry Brewing.

You can enjoy a variety of seasonal and year-round offerings, with many beers inspired by the local area. They often host events such as live music, food trucks, and community gatherings, making it a spot to hangout and socialize. Bring the kids and the pupper because it's kid and dog friendly.

Harpers Ferry Brewing is a must-visit destination on your Maryland craft beer tour. Be sure to pair your visit with a hike in the nearby Harpers Ferry National Historical Park for a perfect day of adventure and relaxation.
